The Terai region of Uttar Pradesh is known for its tigers. However the dense forests, huge grasslands, and water bodies are enough to attract many birds too. Dudhwa and Pilibhit are the two forests I had the chance to visit. Both are about 4-5 hours drive each from either Delhi or Lucknow.
In Dudhwa, I got to see the rare Chinese Rubythroat, Black-hooded Oriole, Peacocks, Oriental Honey Buzzard, Brown Fish Owl and of course the Rhinoceros! A very infrequently visited safari in the Dudhwa region is Katarniaghat Sanctuary which actually is a great place for birds photography.
