After the Oscar awards for movies earlier this month, it is time now for the FIRST OSCAR awards FOR the BIRDS in India!

The Largest, Smallest, Tallest, Fastest etc etc - they all get their due awards today. This is the Critics Choice Awards (based on facts and research available) and for the birds in India only. Popular choice awards selection / suggestion is most welcome too!

The live awards “ceremony” was covered by Times of India last evening (see link in comments box please) ☺️

Hold your breath as we now start to announce the awards!

  • The Largest Bird - Great Indian Bustard (Jaisalmer, Jan 24)
  • The Fastest Bird - Peregrine Falcon (Sunderbans, Nov 24)
  • The Smallest Bird - Pale Billed Flowerpecker (Rongtong, Feb 25)
  • The Best Underwater Diver Bird - Great Cormorant (Bangalore, Dec 23). Note: Other Cormorants can also qualify.
  • The Tallest Bird - Sarus Crane (Gurgaon, May 22)
  • The Widest Wing Span Bird - Himalayan Griffon Vulture (Almora, Feb 23)
  • The Most Colourful Bird - And it’s a tie! Between Himalayan Monal (Chopta, Dec 23) and Indian Pitta (Gurgaon, Sept 22). Note: Both have 9 colours though some sources confirms Monal to have 12 colours
  • The Smallest Owl Raptor - Collared Owlet (Uttarakhand, April 22)
  • The Loudest Bird - And it’s almost a tie again between Red Junglefowl / Rooster (Pilibhit, May 23) and Indian Peacock (Rongtong, Feb 25). Note: The Decibels level for Rooster is slightly higher though.
  • The Longest Living Bird - Greater Flamingo (Greater Rann of Kutch, Feb 23)
